Serving Iowa House District 4
I am honored to represent House District 4 (most of Sioux County) in the Iowa House of Representatives!
Please feel free to sign-up for my email newsletter (goes out weekly while in session) to stay up-to-date with what we are doing in Des Moines.
Republicans swept the state House and Senate races in northwest Iowa Tuesday.
House District 4
In House District 4, Skyler Wheeler beat Independent Jeff VanDerWerff in the heavily Republican district that represents most of Sioux County.
Wheeler received 9,795 votes and VanDerWerff had 5,824.
(Orange City, IA) Skyler Wheeler, the Republican candidate in Iowa House District 4, received key endorsements from several Iowa House Republicans on Thursday. In one of the state’s largest primary turnouts Wheeler received 2,120 votes in order to win the district’s competitive three-way primary with 44.5% of the vote. One of his primary opponents, Jeff VanDerWerff, has decided to run as an independent in order to challenge Wheeler in the general election.
ORANGE CITY – Iowa’s most influential social conservative organization announced its endorsement of Skyler Wheeler in House District 4. The FAMiLY Leader is a group committed to defending Christian conservative values in Iowa and across the nation.
“I am extremely humbled and blessed to receive the support of The FAMiLY Leader,” Wheeler said. “There has been no question throughout this primary which candidate is the strongest Christian conservative. This endorsement reinforces what we’ve known all along.”
Forty-three years ago today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled it was legal for mothers to abort their babies in America. Since then it is estimated more than 57 million unborn children have had their lives ended in the name of choice.
I am one of many young Christian conservatives who, legally, was only a choice for my parents. It’s hard to fathom how much potential the last two generations have lost in the name of choice.
We will never truly be able to replace those lives and that potential we’ve lost. It’s impossible to know what accomplishments would’ve been made by those 57 million-plus boys and girls, men and women, brothers and sisters, moms and dads who were stripped of their own potential.
The good news is my generation is more pro-life than the previous generation. It’s obvious in every science text book ever written that life begins at conception. Technology has made it abundantly obvious that unborn children aren’t just a clump of cells but are indeed a human life just as the Bible states.
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son.” — Matthew 1:23
“Rebekah his wife conceived [and] the children [Jacob and Esau, the most famous twins in history] struggled together within her.” — Genesis 25:22
We encourage you all to keep tabs on what is happening in Des Moines during this legislative session. One way you can do that is to keep up with Rep. John Kooiker’s newsletter.
This is an excerpt of Rep. Kooiker’s first post:
“As you have learned by now, I have declared my intention to not seek re-election in November 2016.
This experience of serving as District 4’s State Representative has been a great and unexpected adventure; while, at the same time, it has given me the opportunity to give 30,000-plus Sioux County people an avenue for their voices to be heard and for their views to be represented in the Iowa State Capitol. I humbly thank God for His leading me to volunteer to fill the gap that the death of Dwayne Alons left, and for the people here in Sioux County for electing me to fill such a unique role.
Thankfully, my path has crossed with a very qualified younger person who is really committed to taking my place in January 2017…

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad promised in 2010 to cut off state funding for Iowa’s largest abortion provider — Planned Parenthood. Our six-term governor has failed to keep his promise and says he doesn’t have the authority as the executive officer of this state to end the public funding of Planned Parenthood.
Republicans must rally for life and demand that Gov. Branstad keep his promise!
We will protest at the Sioux County Courthouse during Branstad’s stop at the building. We will also have a time for prayer in hopes of changing hearts and minds on abortion and seeking God’s forgiveness for our country’s greatest sin.
LETTER: Stop funding for Planned Parenthood
Today, we need Christians to step up to the plate, in government and as taxpaying American citizens, to put the pressure on our elected officials to stop all funding to Planned Parenthood.
Everyone knows (or should know) about these undercover videos, and it just baffles me that there are still people defending this group and even advocating for the need for its existence. It begs the question: Is this the last straw that God has with America?
Kooiker not seeking re-election in HD 4; Wheeler steps up
By Bob Eschliman
A Northwest Iowa member of the Iowa House of Representatives has announced he will not seek re-election in 2016. State Rep. John Kooiker (R-Boyden), who was just elected a year ago to fill a seat left open by the death of his friend, state Rep. Dwayne Alons, said Monday he wants to spend more time with his nine grandchildren.
Kooiker represents House District 4, which includes the cities of Sioux Center, Orange City, Rock Valley, Hull, Hawarden, Alton, Maurice, Granville, Ireton and Chatsworth. Kooiker served last session as vice chairman of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Capitals Appropriations Subcommittee. He also served on the Labor, Local Government, Public Safety, and Veterans Affairs committees.
“Paid for by Wheeler for Representative Committee.”
