Forty-three years

Forty-three years ago today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled it was legal for mothers to abort their babies in America. Since then it is estimated more than 57 million unborn children have had their lives ended in the name of choice.

I am one of many young Christian conservatives who, legally, was only a choice for my parents. It’s hard to fathom how much potential the last two generations have lost in the name of choice.

We will never truly be able to replace those lives and that potential we’ve lost. It’s impossible to know what accomplishments would’ve been made by those 57 million-plus boys and girls, men and women, brothers and sisters, moms and dads who were stripped of their own potential.

The good news is my generation is more pro-life than the previous generation. It’s obvious in every science text book ever written that life begins at conception. Technology has made it abundantly obvious that unborn children aren’t just a clump of cells but are indeed a human life just as the Bible states.

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son.” — Matthew 1:23

“Rebekah his wife conceived [and] the children [Jacob and Esau, the most famous twins in history] struggled together within her.” — Genesis 25:22

“…a woman with child [then] gives birth…” — Exodus 21:22

“He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And… the babe leaped in her womb…” — Luke 1:15,41

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” — Jeremiah 1:5

The life issue should transcend politics. It should not be a partisan thing. Those of us blessed enough to live in a free country should do everything we can in order to protect innocent unborn babies. That is what I pledge to do as your next state representative.

Imagine the horror if we could see the 57 million-plus who have had their lives cut short in the name of choice piled together. Imagine the heartbreak if we could hear their cries, see their tears and feel just a little bit of their pain.

One of my heroes of history, William Wilberforce, famously said “you may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know.”

We see and we know. The question is what are we going to do about it.

In closing, I hope you can watch and share the following two videos. And I hope you will join me in praying for those lives lost in abortion, for those mothers who feel deep pain for previous abortions, for those mothers who are today considering abortions and for our country’s leaders who are still allowing abortions.

Keeping up at the Capitol

We encourage you all to keep tabs on what is happening in Des Moines during this legislative session. One way you can do that is to keep up with Rep. John Kooiker’s newsletter.

This is an excerpt of Rep. Kooiker’s first post:

“As you have learned by now, I have declared my intention to not seek re-election in November 2016.

This experience of serving as District 4’s State Representative has been a great and unexpected adventure; while, at the same time, it has given me the opportunity to give 30,000-plus Sioux County people an avenue for their voices to be heard and for their views to be represented in the Iowa State Capitol. I humbly thank God for His leading me to volunteer to fill the gap that the death of Dwayne Alons left, and for the people here in Sioux County for electing me to fill such a unique role.

Thankfully, my path has crossed with a very qualified younger person who is really committed to taking my place in January 2017.

His name is Skyler Wheeler, and he fits the description of the type of person that Dwayne Alons was looking for to take his place prior to his decision to run for a ninth term.

I am quite sure each of you will get to know him or at least know of him prior to the primary election in June. I think you will be favorably impressed.”

The full version can be found here.

We at Wheeler 4 Iowa ask that you keep Rep. Kooiker and all of our state representatives in your prayers during the session. Pray that they are able to avoid any major disagreements, utilize their God-given wisdom and move our state in the right direction.
